Who Are We?

When the Woodham Ferrers and Bicknacre Parish Council were given seven acres of land adjacent to the priory arch, they set up a group to administer and maintain the arch and land. These volunteers became known as “The Friends of Priory Fields”.

The Working Party

The Friends consist of a committee, with a representative from the Parish Council, and the Working Party. The Working Party is a group of dedicated volunteers who have carried out much work to improve access around the fields and particularly to the arch. With the help of a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund a further 25 acres of land was purchased.

Many of the committee members are also active on the work parties.

Join Our Team of Volunteers

This is now a great challenge for a small group and there is always a requirement for extra volunteers to help with the various tasks around the fields. We have monthly work parties with particular works carried out at other times. If you are fit, enjoy working outdoors and could spare a little time you would be very welcome to join us.

Our Aims

  1. to conserve the arch of Bicknacre Priory and to develop and enhance the land surrounding it which is owned by the Parish of Woodham Ferrers and Bicknacre. Full cognisance will be taken of the views of English Heritage, or its successors, when undertaking any developmental or restorative work.
  2. to increase public awareness and understanding of the archaeology, history and natural history of the site.
  3. to develop parts of the site in a variety of ways for the benefit of the community.

In pursuing these aims the views of the Parish Council will be fully respected at all times.
